One of the many hidden treasures of Jim Thorpe is a historic stretch of road located behind Broadway known as Race Street. Race Street houses the famed St. Mark's church and also contains a group of houses known as "Stone Row." Originally, this group of houses was known as "Packer's Row." Built of stone, the houses may have been a copy of Elfreth's Alley in Philadelphia. All the houses are sturdily built and well designed. A stone wall divides every other dwelling t o help cut down on noise and act as a firewall.
Chimneys are built into the dividing stone walls with grills in the walls of the upper floors from which the rising heat spread its warmth. While the houses are basically identical, slight variations such as ornate doorways, bay windows, etc. give each home an identity of its own. Today, some of the homes have been made into specialty shops, while other remain private residence.
