The lake is spring fed and empties into the adjacent Emerald Lake, then eventually into the north branch of the Au Sable River.

Fish are abundant in the lake with large bass and pike taken regularly, with occasional walleye. The fishing is especially good in the spring time and throughout most of the summer. Ice fishermen also do well through the ice. There is no public access, so there is little fishing pressure except from the friendly neighbors.

Residents on Ranger Lake gather together every July 4th for the annual picnic of family and friends for a cook out of hamburgers and hotdogs. Life on the lake is quiet and relaxing, yet only minutes from town.
