Established in 1783, Greeneville is the second oldest town in the state and has a rich history that draws thousands of tourists each year. With its central location in the eastern United States, the county is within a day's drive of more than 70% of the country's population.  The county is populated by 65,945 residents, 15,274 of those residing within the city limits of Greeneville.  Within Greene County are the four municipalities of Greeneville, Baileyton, Mosheim and Tusculum, each operating with its own governmental body.

With four distinct seasons, the average annual temperature is 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The county's main industries are manufacturing, agriculture and tourism.

Annual events in the community include the Antique Appraisal Fair in February, the Tiny Day/Red Edmonds Memorial Softball Tournament for high school girls in April, the National Assocation of Intercollegiate Athletics Women's Golf National Championships and the Iris Festival in May, the Downtown Cruise-In in June, the Greene County Fair in August, the Aussie Fall Fest Chillin’ & Grillin’ and Halloween Happenings in October, Greeneville Woman’s Club Holiday Bazaar in November, and the GreenBank Ladies' Classic Basketball Tournament and Greeneville Christmas Parade in December.
