DevonsHeaven is a Kentucky style horse farm / country estate dropped into Madison County in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.

 

It is a 28.8 acre property that is mostly cleared pasture. At least half of the property is flat or semi flat and not hard to bale or bush hog. The lower portions are all fenced with horse friendly board fence with integrated two strand hot wire to keep them from chewing on it. The entire property is fenced. All of the cleared land is accessible by four wheel drive tractor for grooming. All the rocks have been cleared making mowing quite enjoyable. We have fescue with a good deal of clover growing in the pastures. It makes wonderful hay.  Approximately 20 domestic blueberry bushes just above the house provide a bumper crop.  A flat area at the base of the upper pasture behind the house is well suited and has been used as a large garden.

 

The barn is an old tobacco barn that has been converted into an equine barn. It has rock maple on the inside which insulates the stalls while allowing good ventilation and this wood is so hard it was impossible to drive nails through it by hand. It resists chewing quite well. The barn has a generator hookup that has been inspected and a gas powered generator available. It is plumbed for water and has its own water heater. It has many fans for ventilation in the summer which does wonders to keep the flies down. They are mounted in the rafters over the stalls. It has coax cable to the houses for monitoring the barn with video and sound. It has a phone connection as well. The stalls have thick rubber mats which are the best for equines. The barn has a new roof which extends over a large outside storage area.

 

The water on the property is via a deep mountain well. It is about 450 feet deep and delivers water that has been tested and is very similar to the premium bottled waters.  In fact, it tastes just like Mountain Valley, the choice of presidents for decades :). We have a spring on the property that is currently shut off. We used that for many years before the drought in the late 90s when it went dry. It now is producing a good deal of water again which is drained off into Walker Branch in the front pasture. It is plumbed to the pump house and could be tested and turned back on. It produces water that is very similar to the deep mountain well water.  We put in a new septic system which has a huge drainage field in the front pasture and a gray water field. This system was inspected. The front pasture has been terraformed to drain into Walker Branch while remaining easy to mow.

 

The outside of the house features a large wraparound deck with screened in porches on both the lower and upper level. The siding is new as is the paint on the pump house and fence. The windows are new and state of the art. The roof on the house is new. The house also has an inspected generator hook up box integrated with the power box for the house.

 

The inside the house has been completely renovated. The floors have been restored downstairs and where there was no hard wood floor the highest quality laminate has been installed. It is a 35 year laminate that has not been scratched yet even with the spaniels on it. The ceilings and walls have all been restored with new dry wall and paint. The bathrooms have been completely remodeled with new fixtures and laminate or tile. The shower upstairs is a built in place custom shower made with frame less heavy glass and custom fixtures. The bathtub downstairs is a whirlpool tub. The only thing that drains into the septic is the toilet downstairs and the shower and toilet upstairs. Everything else drains into the gray water field so that it does not have to go into the septic tank. All of the sinks are new as well.

 

There are three outside doors to the house and all have new custom doors installed. One back door leads to a fenced back yard and the other into an enclosed screened in porch which has a door to the large deck. There are ceiling fans in every room. The house has been retrofitted with AC and gas air driven heat within the last 5 years. We put a big enough unit and air handler in to keep it quite cool even in July and August. There is a gas log fireplace in the downstairs living room. There is one bedroom downstairs and two upstairs. We currently have one bedroom converted to a cinema room. There is a nice upstairs office with an attached screened in porch accessible only from inside the house. The house has 2,039 square feet of air conditioned space plus the two screen in porches and the large deck.

 

We have enjoyed many years of horse and other equine raising on this exceptional property. It is in one of the most beautiful areas of the United States. It is located in a quiet valley with extraordinary mountain sunset views from the porch and deck. The views from the top of the mountain behind the house that is part of the property are breathtaking.

 

Our time raising equines and living in the country is at an end but someone will very much enjoy this property. It's set up for large animals but serves equally well as a country estate that would make any owner proud. There are photographs and a short video tour on this site.
