3 Ways to Lighten and Brighten Your Home

How can you make your home more photogenic and spacious? Lighten and brighten. By allowing more light to bounce around a room, your home will appear bigger and more attractive to buyers. And it’s much cheaper than adding square footage to your home. By utilizing natural light, putting on a fresh coat of paint and adding some indoor lighting, you’ll impress buyers with a clean and roomy house they’ll love to call home.

1. Master Your Natural Light
By using the light of the sun instead of light from a fixture, you can save on energy costs and boost a buyer’s mood when walking through the home. Some of the ways you can intensify your natural light source are:

  • Cut back overgrown landscaping
  • Remove heavy window treatments
  • Wash windows
  • Replace solid entry & exit doors to the home
  • Add a mirror adjacent to your window to bounce light around the room

2. Add A Fresh Coat of Paint
Another way to make a room look lighter and brighter is by utilizing the right paint colors. Dark colors absorb light while light colors and whites reflect natural light. Before choosing a wall color, determine what direction the room faces and how much natural light enters the room.

Neutral colors for your walls that are also earth tones will appeal to buyers, so avoid stark whites and bold colors that could disrupt the buying process. Here are a few of my favorite color choices from Benjamin Moore:

  • Eternity AF-695
  • Shaker Beige AC-36
  • Silver Fox 2108-50
  • Stone Harbor 2111-50

3. Increase Indoor Lights
The third way to create a light and bright feel in your home is utilizing indoor lighting. While this seems obvious, most homeowners have ample lighting in their home yet neglect to change the light bulbs once they’ve blown out. So, don’t forget to take a moment and check your bulbs, make sure you have the appropriate wattage and make sure all of the bulbs match on a multi-bulb fixture.

There are different ways to utilize indoor lighting, so consider adding more of these items to your home if space is dark:

  • Ceiling fixtures
  • Fans with a lighting kit
  • Chandeliers
  • Table lamps
  • Floor lamps
